Why WhatsApp quietly ruins your wedding photos
The group chat feels like the obvious place to share photos. It is also the fastest way to make them unprintable.

Every wedding ends with a group chat full of photos. It feels like the obvious solution: everyone is already there, nobody needs an account, and the pictures arrive instantly.
Then, months later, you try to print one. And it is soft, blocky, and cannot be enlarged past a postcard.
What actually happens to the file
When an image is sent as a normal photo in a chat app, it is re-compressed before it leaves the phone. A 4 MB photo from a modern camera can arrive as a few hundred kilobytes. The picture still looks fine on a phone screen — that screen is small, and the damage hides well at that size.
Printing is where it shows. A print has no backlight and no forgiving scale. Detail that was thrown away to make the file small is simply gone, and no amount of editing brings it back.
Sending "as document" is not a real fix
It does preserve the file, and it works for one or two photos. It falls apart at the scale of a wedding: nobody sends 200 photos as individual documents, and the ones that do arrive land in a chat thread with no order, buried under messages.
The other thing a group chat loses
Compression is only half the problem. A chat is a timeline, not an album. Photos are interleaved with congratulations, voice notes, and someone asking about parking. Six months on, finding a particular picture means scrolling through all of it — and once the chat is muted or cleared, the photos go with it.
- No original files. Only the compressed copies.
- No order. Ceremony and after-party are mixed with chatter.
- No permanence. A cleared chat takes the photos with it.
What to do instead
Use the chat for talking and a shared pool for photos. The pool should keep files at their original size, hold them somewhere that is not a message thread, and let guests add without making an account — the moment a guest has to sign up for something, most of them stop.
Then the photos are still worth printing a year later, which is the entire point of having taken them.
